Kindergarten staff want four terms

Kindergarten teachers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a four-term year in a national survey done by their association.

Of 548 teachers who replied to the survey, 484 supported a four-term year. Replies were received from about half the association’s members, said the president, Ms Jean Pearson. The response reflected the views of the rest of the kindergarten teachers, she said. Teachers were also asked whether they favoured

either a national or a local trial of four terms for kindergartens. A national trial was the more popular option.

Two thirds of the teachers also voted in favour of retaining the existing three weeks holidays in September rather than transfer a week to the Christmas holidays. Ms Pearson said the survey results would be sent to the Education Department, which was collecting information on the four-term idea.
