Weapon wielded; noise complaint sequel
Nelson reporter A Christchurch noise control officer and a policeman had been confronted by a man wielding a martial arts weapon, when they visited his home in response to a noise complaint, Judge Headifen was told in the District Court, at Nelson, yesterday. Peter John Wall, aged 23, an unemployed driver, pleaded guilty to being in possession of an offensive weapon, and with committing a breach of a hirepurchase agreement in that he sold furniture valued at $2292 still under hire-pur-chase.
He was sentenced to four months periodic detention and admitted to probation for 18 months. He was also ordered to make compensation of $2039 to Coles Nelson, Ltd. Sergeant P. D. Grooby said that when a female Christchurch noise control officer and a constable knocked on the door of the defendant’s house at 9 Arthur Street, Christchurch, in answer to a complaint about the stereo noise, they were confronted by the defendant wielding a martial arts weapon known as a nanchuka. He twirled this weapon round in front of them and since the officer and constable were in no position to handle a situation like this they retreated, he said.
