Bach concertos

On Sunday, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will conclude its winter concerts featuring Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos by playing the first and second concertos.

The second Brandenburg Concerto includes one of the most difficult trumpet solos in the concert repertoire. The soloist will be Graeme Hanify who is musical director of the Airforce Band in Wellington. Vere Smyth and John Young, both member of the Christchurch orchestra, will play the delightful Vivaldi

Concerto for Two Trumpets. The performance of the early Haydn Symphonies entitled “Morning,” “Noon” and “Evening” will conclude with the final of the trio. This features solos from two violins, cello and bassoon and these will be played by Paulene Smith and David Shelley (violins), Frances De Goldi (cello) and Neville Forsythe (bassoon). The orchestra will be conducted by Carl Pini, the senior lecturer in Music at the University of Canterbury.
