Pamphlets in Embassy
Sir,—l was quite surprised a few days ago to see National Party 1981 election “Growth” pamphlets on display in the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia. I understand the duty of our embassies abroad is to represent New Zealand and New Zealanders, not the governing political party. If such a facility is available to the National Party, in fairness and on principle, it should be available to the Social Credit, Labour and Values parties. No material from these parties was evident in the Jakarta Embassy. May I ask the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to outline the Ministry’s policy on distributing political party publications in embassies, and to explain fiow the National Party only came to have its pamphlets in the Jakarta Embassy. — Yours, etc., FRED OVERMARS. July 31, 1983.
[The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mr Mervyn Norrish, replies: “Climate for Growth’ is not a party political pamphlet. It was produced by the Department of Trade and Industry, the Treasury and the Tourist and Publicity Department, and was distributed to overseas posts along with other information publications about New Zealand. It is worth recording that New Zealand political parties are able to distribute their material to our posts in election years, so that overseas voters can be well informed on the major issues.”]
