Gambler denies ‘fixing’ races
NZPA-Reuter London A Derbyshire gambler has denied being involved in alleged horse race fixing. Harry Bardsley, who lives near Glossop, was named by the “Sun” as being behind the alleged racket. Fifteen jockeys are being interviewed by the Jockey Club in connection with the allegations. The newspaper said that some jockeys had been paid up to £lOOO (SNZ229O) to fix race results. It said Mr Bardsley had
told a reporter, posing as a millionaire punter, of £lOO,OOO ($NZ229,000) being made on one Royal Ascot race this year. However, in an interview on television Mr Bardsley said: “I’ve never won any money at Royal Ascot — none whatsoever, not in the last 20 years.” The newspaper asserts Mr Bardsley, aged 52, also said he had provided prostitutes for sex sessions after bribed riders helped him pull off betting coups.
