Marsden back

Midge Marsden, the New Zealand blues exponent, returns to Christchurch this week with a new band. Marsden and the band, the Jumpers, will play three consecutive evenings at the Gladstone Tavern, beginning tonight. The Jumpers were formed in April, and are based in Dunedin. It is the first time that they will

have played outside Dunedin since they were formed.

The Jumpers are a fourpiece — John Dodd (bass), who has played in the Midge Marsden Band since 1981; Steve young (keyboards), one of the driving forces behind Mother Goose; Pol O’Shea (guitar), an Australian session and touring musician; and John Fielding (drums), who previously played with Surprise Surprise from Dunedin. Since returning to New Zealand after playing with the Phil Manning Band in Australia, Marsden has led a number of groups, notably the Kiwi Connection, and the previously mentioned Midge Marsden Band. Earlier this year he toured the North Island with Indicator, a big band with a strong horn section. Also accompanying Midge Marsden and the Jumpers on their visit to Christchurch is the itinerant troubadour, Gary McCormick.
