Is your name on roll?
Christchurch city residents and ratepayers have just over a month to ensure they are on the local body electoral rolls. To give people a chance to check that they are on the rolls, the council will set up special booths in Cathedral Square and the City Mall on Monday. There, and at booths which will be in suburban shopping centres at various times, people will be able to inspect the rolls and enrol if necessary. The same facilities will be available at the council’s Tuam. Street offices and at selected public libraries and suburban post offices throughout Christchurch. The rolls will close at 4 pm. on September 9. To be eligible to vote in the Christchurch City local body elections, people must be at least 18 years of age and must either own property in the city or have lived in New Zealand for at least a year and in Christchurch for at least three months, according to the council’s returning officer, Mr W. R. Davies.
Mr Davies said that anyone who was eligible to vote but was not on the rolls was committing an offence;
