Fewer homes for rent

Parliamentary reporter In qll but five of New Zealand’s main urban centres, there were fewer private dwellings available for rent in 1981 than in 1976, according to a comparison of the 1976 and 1981 census figures prepared by the Statistics Department.

None were in the South Island. They were Whangarei, western Auckland, Wanganui, Upper Hutt, and Masterton.

The percentage drop nationally is not shown in the figures. In the South Island, the figures were.—Nelson (down 1.2 per cent), Christchurch (down 1.8 per cent), Timaru (down 0.1 per cent), Dunedin (down 0.8 per cent), and Invercargill (down 1.0 per cent).
