Bell name to go
NZPA Washington The American Telephone and Telegraph Company agreed yesterday to a Judge’s demand that it give up future use of the name Bell, clearing the way for the break-up of the United States’ basic telephone system from January 1. The chairman of A.T. and T., Mr Charles Brown, said that with the acceptance of all the conditions demanded by Federal District Judge Harold Greene on July 8, including loss of the Bell name, “the decks are clear for completing the divestiture.”
The company’s decision brings to an end nine years of anti-trust litigation and clears the last legal hurdle to the break-up of the world’s biggest corporation. Judge Greene bad approved the anti-trust settlement that required the break-up of the Bell system on August 24 this year.
