The Bavarian Premier, Franz Josef Strauss (right), has been re-elected leader of the Christian Social Union, the Bavarian ally of Bonn, Chancellor the Helmut Kohl’s Christian Democrats; but his majority was much smaller. At the thirtyfourth C.S.U. party conference in Munich he was backed by 662 of the 859 delegates who voted, with 163 voting against him. Seventy-seven per cent would more than satisfy most politicians, but not Strauss, who since 1974 has regularly polled at least 94 per cent in votes for the party leadership. Two years ago, when he stood as Shadow Chancellor against Helmut Schmidt he was backed by 96.6 per cent of C.S.U. conference delegates. Alongside Strauss (left) is the lion that is Bavaria’s heraldic emblem.
