Labour Party
Sir,—ls your correspondent, W. Martin (July 30) serious when saying that it is bad luck for the people of New Zealand that the Labour Party has continued to lose elections? The only bad luck about it is for the party, and not the country. The curse of our society is party politics, for long-term planning is impossible. Even the subsidy is here to stay, with both Labour and National trying to divorce the internal cost structure from the external, plus the subsidising of what should be the most efficient farming industry in the world. The concept that the world owes us a living is acceptable to most New Zealanders and a high standard of living is thought to be a right and productivity and honest effort with payment for work done would incur the wrath of the Human Rights Commission or may even be questioned by the Equal Opportunities Tribunal. Certainly we all have the opportunity to progress and use our talents effectively for this is a young country, by world standards, full of opportunity with a wonderful environment. But the party must come first and the New Zealand Uneconomic Community has been formed in competition with the E.E.C.—Yours, etc., L. J. STEVENS. July 30, 1983.
