Strong gains in Australia
Australian sharemarkets continued to surge ahead strongly, with big gains recorded across the boards, because of sustained heavy buying by foreign investors. Blue-chip issues posted the sharpest gains, as the 50 leaders index soared 12 points to 648.1 — a gain of 1.8 per cent.
The all-ordinaries index closed at a new, high for the year after gaining 10.5 points to 686.2 — a 1.5 per cent rise. Both the all-industrials index, which vaulted 11.1 points or 1.3 per cent, to 824.9, and the all-resources index, which advanced 9.9 points, or 1.7 per cent to
573.9, closed at new highs for the year.
In the resource sector, further big gains were posted by the heavyweight miners, select gold stocks, and leading oil-and-gas issues.
In the industrial sector, strong gains were recorded among media, building material, sugar, transport, retail stocks, banks, and by property trusts.
