Fast for Life supported

About 20 Christchurch people will begin a series of three-day fasts tomorrow in support of the international Fast for Life in France and the United States.

A group of peace campaigners is organising the Fast for Life in an effort to halt the arms race. Tomorrow is the' anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.

An organiser of the Christchurch fasts, Ms Jules Whittaker, said that the support fasting would begin at Christchurch Cathedral at 11 a.m. The fasters, who will take turns to fast, will be in the Cathedral each day but transfer to the peace room in the Arts Centre each night. Family groups will fast for one-day periods.

One of those who are taking part in the inter-

national fast, and who are prepared to fast to the death, was in Christchurch several months ago. Mr Charles Gray was visiting family in New Zealand and spreading news about the fast. His wife, Dorothy Granada, will also be in the Fast for Life. Mr Gray said there would have to be "a significant response" by the principal nuclear powers before the fast would be abandoned. He said this could mean a reversal of the decision to deploy in Europe, the cutting of development funds, or a moratorium. The Christchurch fasters will continue their support action for as long as the international fasters last, and are prepared to fast for six weeks to two months, according to Ms Whittaker.
