Few object to road closing
Opposition to Christchurch City Council plans to close part of Victoria Street to traffic and zone the street area for commercial purposes has been limited.
Fewer than 20 submissions to both proposals had been received by yesterday’s deadline for comments on the street-stopping plan.
Five objections came from businesses in the triangle of buildings owned by the council between the Town Hall and the Salvation Army Citadel. Under commercial redevelopment of'the northwest corner of the Victoria Square block, those buildings would be removed, possibly to make way for an
international class hotel. Triangle businesses said that closing the street to traffic would remove legal access to their premises. Two other businesses, one in Peterborough Street and the other in Victoria, Street, north of the planned closing, objected to the idea. The North of the Square Business Association said the street should remain
open until more car-parks were provided in the area. Two individual members of Inner City Operation Neighbourhood (1.C.0.N.) said the street-stopping could have adverse traffic effects in nearby streets. Several other letters, some containing suggestions, were also received on the City Council proposals.
