League cost no bar for Rangers
Rangers, the club most likely to win the Hertz Soccer League, will definitely re-enter the Rothmans League next year if they qualify for, and win, the national play-off at the end of this season.
The club’s president (Mr Alan Smyth) has confirmed that Rangers’ aim is to return to the league where they spent the 1980 and 1981 seasons, before being relegated. Mr Smyth said that there was a lot of work to be done, and he anticipated a cost of about $30,000 for Rangers to compete in the national league. But he feels the club can cope with the extraordinary financial demands of the league.
"The financial considerations are a worry,” he admitted. “But we are confident we can find the money.
“We have been there before and know what it is going to cost us,” he said. The three regional league winners and the bottom national league team will compete over a week-end as soon as the winter competitions are completed to find one team to fill the twelfth spot for next year. Mr Smyth is also hopeful that the club will have the services of their impressive English striker, Mark Gatenby, next season.
Gatenby’s two-year contract with Rangers could well hinge on his residential status in New Zealand. His six-month temporary permit expires shortly, but the club is confident that that can be extended by another six months and that Gatenby will be able to remain in Christchurch for the 1984 winter.
