United unchanged but hungry for points

Christchurch Mogal United’s manager, Mr Terry Conley, will stick to an unchanged team for its Rothmans Soccer League match against National Mutual Miramar on Sunday — despite having lost its last three league games. It will be United’s first league game at Queen Elizabeth II Park since its disastrous loss to Manurewa on June 26. Since then, its fortunes have slumped alarmingly and Mr Conley admitted that a loss on Sunday will end United’s title chances.

However, he will not make alterations to the side, which has conceded seven goals in its last two league matches and has failed to make full use of its goalscoring opportunities. “I don’t think changing our formation will make any difference,” said Mr Conley. “Things are just not going our way.” But Mr Conley will be forced to make an alteration after Sunday’s match as his midfielder, Graeme Archer, was cautioned last

week-end in United’s loss to Dunedin City. He has now passed 20 penalty points and the Canterbury Football Association’s judicial committee is sure to impose a suspension when it meets next week. To beat Miramar, United will need to get the ball past its international goal-keeper, Barry Pickering, comfortably the best in the country. It must also nullify the threat of its high-scoring striker, Mick Howard, who has scored 12 league goals this winter. The other matches on Sunday are Dunedin Technical v. Dunedin City, Manurewa v. HanimexNorth Shore, Mount Wellington v. Papatoetoe, McKee Nelson United v. Napier City Rovers and Wellington Diamond United v. Gisborne City. On the local scene, Cashmere-Wanderers will meet New Brighton in the main game at English Park tomorrow. In the other matches, Rangers will face Halswell United, South Canterbury will host Woolston

W.M.C., Nomads United will play Christchurch United’s reserves, and Western will meet Shamrock.
