Al Dwain likely favourite at Franklin

Special correspondent Auckland Forgiven a form lapse two starts back at Trentham Al Dwain is in such good form that he will almost certainly be favourite for the August Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Franklin Racing Club’s meeting at Pukekohe tomorrow. Al Dwain was a disappointment at Trentham, when so badly beaten over 1600 m in the Whyte Handicap, behind Creek Meer and Company. He finished fourth behind Paul’s Gold in a weight-for-age 1400 at Tauranga on June 25, and second last time, behind Kar Dan, over 1600 m at Levin on July 20. Second place behind Paul’s Gold in the Carbine Club Stakes, a 1600 m event on the first day of the Great Northern meeting, represented another of his recent Rood efforts. None of Al Dwain’s vpponents have done as well, not for quite a while anyway. Best of them might be Eastern Ruler, one of the youngest horses in the field, and Rua Whero and Last Lu.

Eastern Ruler has been doing pretty well in the intermediate classes and for this first try at Cl he has been allowed a weight concession from the amounts he has carried lately. When a good third behind Sovereign’s Road and Old Gold over 1200 m at Te Rapa last Saturday he had 56.5 kg and he is down to 52kg.

A four-year-old Eastern Ruler won three stakes back in a 1300 m event at Pukekohe. Timandra Blaze was runner-up and Voodoo Rhythm, third, so the form looks sound. Jimbil is a last start winner but not a certain starter. The track will need to be reasonably good if he is to run and indications yesterday were that the going could be heavy. Bold Getty, with a last start win at Te Awamutu on July 23, and Rua Whero, which beat all but Tamatea

the latest time, over 1200 m at Paeroa on July 22, are due consideration. Last Lu rates even higher. He won easily at his last start, an intermediate 2000 m race at Te Awamutu on July 23, and had a good win, the time before, in a C2 1600 m event at Hawera.

Swaps usually goes fast but whether he will last 1600 m on a big track like Pukekohe is doubtful. Cobham is due success and perhaps it will come his way in the second leg of the double, the 2200 m Tuakau Handicap.

In the last five of the eight starts he has had since he resumed racing in the autumn, Cobham has finished either second, third or fourth. Obviously he needs to improve only slightly for a win. Bonnie Gio, Kosbar and a Hawera mare, Lady Jade, are other prospects. Jbt: 6 Tab: FA T.A.B.
