Firemen hurt fighting fire
Two firemen were taken to hospital with injuries suffered while they were fighting a short but intense blaze that caused about $200,000 damage to a dry-cleaning plant-in Oxford Terrace last evening. One of the firemen suffered cuts to a hand and the other was hit on the head by a tile. The two men, whom the Fire Service declined to identify, were treated at Christchurch Hospital. The plant — run by Rainbow Dry-cleaning, Ltd — was burnt out. It took seven Fire Service appliances about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control after
the alarm was raised. Mr Wayne Wood, a partner in the firm with his brother, Russell, said last evening that if they decided to re-establish the business it would cost them about $200,000. He had no idea last evening what they would do. The firm employed six workers. Mr Wood said that all the clothing and other goods in the plant had been destroyed. Fire Service safety officers had determined where the fire had started, but not what had caused it. The fire safety men will return this morning to continue their investigation.
