Mid’s hopes founder in mud
The Ranfurly Shield is still in Christchurch after the Canterbury rugby team overcame Mid-Canterbury, 28-0, on a depressingly wet and bitingly cold afternoon at Lancaster Park yesterday. The challenger had won three and drawn one of its last four games with Canterbury in Ashburton, but it failed to reproduce that form on the big occasion, and slipped to an inevitable defeat after being behind, 0-18, at half-time. Canterbury will now face North Auckland in the fourth challenge of the season next Wednesday. Pictures by CATHERINE HARRISON and DAVID CHARTERIS.
