Soccer youth South Canterbury in upset win over Canty
The Canterbury under 14 representative soccer team suffered a rare defeat, to South Canterbury, in Timaru last week-end.
Having beaten Otago and South Canterbury the previous week, Canterbury went into the match full of confidence. However, South Canterbury turned on a fine performance to win, 2-1. Canterbury’s next two matches were won, against Mid-Canterbury, 11-0, and against North Otago, 5-0. The leading goalscorers were Steven Burrows, Sash Radujko, Steven Mooney and Alun Evans, while Michael Sayers performed well in the midfield.
Riccarton’s ninth grade player, Justin O’Malley, scored his team’s goal in its 1-1 draw with Kaiapoi last Saturday. He also hit the cross-bar with a fine effort, and also chipped ; jn when his defence' was being pressured. Robert Skellerup and Richard Sherriff played well while John Metcalf at full-back was difficult to get past. Jeremy Taylor and Hayden Rees formed a good attacking combination for Kaiapoi together with their captain, Wayne Garrard.
The pick of the midfield was Chantelle Cox, who did not flinch from some forceful
Cashmere beat Shamrock, 10, to join it at the top of the fourteenth grade points table. Alun Evans scored the allimportant goal, after Kelly McLoughlin, Shamrock’s left back, made his one mistake in the match.
Radujko, Shamrock’s captain, missed a penalty in the match, in which both goalkeepers, Andre Kamo of Cashmere and Steven Burrows, had good performances. Snow Farrant and Julian Bowden worked hard in attack for Shamrock, but found Tony Phair and Michael Sayers a testing duo in defence. Shamrock had a good 3-0 win over Western in an eleventh grade match, with Johnathan Mooar in fine form for Shamrock. Richard Parris scored the first goal, Mooar neatly deflected Philip Abrahamson’s corner for the second goal and added the third after a strong run down the middle. Malcoln Matthewson was Shamrock’s strongest defender, making life difficult for Western’s attackers. Simon Aitchison in the midfield, Chris Smythe on the wing and Johnathan Hearn, a full-back, were the pick of the Western team.
The Canterbury under 12 team, preparing for the
national tournament later this month, had a demanding workout last Sunday, made up of three representative fixtures. At 10.00 a.m. Canterbury beat Mid-Canterbury, 5-0; three hours later they hammered the. West Coast, 10-0; and at 2.15 p.m. narrowly edged out South Canterbury, 2-1. Korosh Monsef broke hiS‘ recent scoring drought with eight of the 17 Canterbury goals, while Andrew McDermott scored five times. Nathan Astle, Brendon Furness, Colin Evans and Thomas Patton scored one each.
Lincoln Blair and Vaughn Snowden performed well at the back, while the goal-keeper, Lloyd Rutherford, made one particularly fine save. Rangers and Shamrock battled out an exciting 1-1 draw in a ninth grade game at Ray Blank Park. Rangers scored first through Paul Sharman, a good goal made by some impressive play by David Wilson and Jason Brown.
Chris Diver on the wing worked tirelessly while Darren Hawker was a solid full-back. Shamrock’s goalscorer was Michael van Dyk, who worked purposefully with Tim Doherty and Giles Simon. Russel Sly and Steven Hazelburg were the pick of the defenders.
