Too many sales entries
PA Auckland Hundreds of thoroughbred breeders will be disappointed at their entries for the established yearling sales next summer not being accepted. A total of 2020 entries were received for the twoday National sale, at Trentham, and the three-day auction in Hamilton. However, only about 1400 yearlings. can be accepted for the two sales — 550 for Trentham and around 850 for Hamilton.
The manager of Wrightson Bloodstock, which conducts the sales, Mr Michael Floyd, said that the surplus entries would be transferred to a further, two-day auction which his firm will stage in March. The choice of yearlings for Trentham and Hamilton, has again been an arduous
business for the selection panel of nine which met for the purpose on four days last week at Ellerslie racecourse.
Chaired by Mr Floyd the panel comprised Messrs Michael Otto, Jim Lambert, Bob Fielder, John Cameron, Joe Walls, and Misses Pat O’Brien and Jane Bunbury, of Wrightson Bloodstock, and Mr Steve Brem, representing the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.
Mr Floyd said it was regrettable but inevitable that the entries for Trentham and the Waikato would be in such numbers to compel a big number not being accepted. He said that “saleability” was the criterion for selection and on that score pedigree was a prime consideration.
