Shipping news Sulphur stored at Lyttelton
More than 8000 tonnes of sulphur is being temporarily stored at Lyttelton because of a strike at the Ravensdown fertiliser works at Hornby. The sulphur was unloaded from the bulk carrier Star Pouko'u, which arrived at port from the United States on Tuesday. However, the same day 40 employees at the works walked off the job after a row developed over a man who had asked for unpaid leave of absence to care for his terminally ill wife. Consequently, sulphur from the 18,892-ton Star Poukou was trucked to a storage area at Cashin Quay. The site, behind the weigh bridge at the quay, is used at times when circumstances do not allow bulk products to be immediately freighted to Christchurch. However, the sulphur shipment is the biggest quantity of bulk goods to be stored there for some time. It will probably not stay there long as work is expected to resume at the fertiliser works today. The Star Poukou is scheduled to sail for Dunedin today. ARRIVALS Darwin Trader (6 a.m.), 10,802, Wellington (S.C.N.Z.) Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Dunedin (S.C.N.Z.)
