Travel sickness plaster soon
A new way of combating travel sickness, tried by American astronauts, will soon be available from New Zealand chemists. It is a tiny stick-on patch containing a motion sickness drug designed to be worn behind the ear. Membrane layers allow the drug to filter slowly through the skin into the bloodstream to give protection for up to three days. A spokesman for the New Zealand distributor, CibaGeigy, Ltd, said the “transdermal therapeutic system” was developed in
g the United States about y two years ago. His company 11 was one of two which v already imported plasters containing a different ii drug for angina sufferers. ' Health Department approval had been given for " the plasters containing the ’ motion sickness drug, scopo- ' lamine, which should be available within the next week. ? He said the system avoided side effects which j could happen if the same : drug was taken orally or i injected.
