New 5-speed Range Rover

Five-speed versions of the luxury go-anywhere Range Rover have been introduced in Britain by BL, Ltd. 1 The new gearbox is said to make the vehicle more flexible while at the same time it has eliminated the transmission whine that has always bedevilled the Range Rover. The 5-speed Range Rover is a spin-off from the arrival on the market earlier this year of revised Land-Rover One Ten. An adapted version of the One Ten gearbox will henceforth be used in all manual Range

Rovers as a standard fitment, replacing the old 4speed gearbox. Benefits gained from the change are said to be a distinct improvement in mid-range performance with the provision of more acceleration in the 50 to llOkm/h speed range. The gearbox change has also boosted the top gear ratio to give nearly 44km/h per lOOOrpm. Fifth gear is effectively an overdrive ratio and it is claimed that fuel economy is 10 per cent better than in the old 4-speed.
