Chatham Cup ties
Both the Adidas Chatham Cup soccer semi-finals on August 13-14 will be played in Auckland, but almost certainly on different days. Mount Wellington, seven times a finalist, will meet Dunedin City, which won the Cup two years ago. Hani-mex-North Shore, which beat the Mount in the 1979 final, will play Gisborne City. It is unlikely that the matches will be played as a double-header, according to Mr Gwyn Evans, the secretary of the New Zealand Football Association. This will mean using two
different venues in the same city, and common sense indicates that both the Saturday and the Sunday will have to be used if big gates are to be realistically expected. However, he confirmed that the N.Z.F.A. does have the power to alter the venue of a Cuptie: “There is a provision within the rules, but if a venue was changed it would bring a few comments from various avenues,” he said. The final will be played on the week-end of September 17-18.
