NZPA Manila A typhoon that swept across the drought-stricken Philippines at the week-end had left at least 38 people dead, 62 missing, and tens of thousands homeless, relief agencies said yesterday. The English-language newspaper, “Bulletin Today,” quoting reports from its provincial correspondents, put the death toll at 52. Spokesmen at the Office of Civil Defence, and the national Red Cross said that scores of people also had been injured on Friday as Typhoon Vera moved across southern Luzon — the nation’s most populour island — ending eight
months of drought. In Luzon’s seven provinces relief officials said that 6282 homes had been destroyed and another 7683 damaged, affecting 52,610 people. They estimated damage to crops and property at more than ?USI million. The storm, packing 130km/h winds at its peak, knocked out power and communication lines and forced the closing of schools, Government offices and private businesses in Manila and surrounding provinces. In nearby Bataan province 18 people were reported killed and 58 missing.
