A ridge over the south of the South Island should maintain fine cold weather in the west and south. District Forecasts: Canterbury: Scattered light rain about the coast clearing with moderate south-westerlies dying out; fine and cold inland with light winds. Marlborough: Strong southerlies about the Straits slowly moderating; rain on the Kaikoura coast,

but only scattered falls elsewhere; cold. Nelson, Buller, Westland: Moderate south-easterlies predominating; fine and cool. Tomorrow: Drizzle clearing later in Marlborough; elsewhere mainly fine. Extended range forecast for the South Island for the period Thursday to Saturday: Little or no rain in the west and north.
