Seismic tests for oil end

Wellington reporter The Bp, Shell, Todd consortium prospecting for oil off the Canterbury coast has finished its seismic studies. The general manager of BP, Shell, Todd Canterbury Services, Ltd, Mr J. P. Simpson, said yesterday that the company was now interpreting the data and would not begin drilling before next year. It would be several months before decisions on drilling sites would be made. The company holds two five-year prospecting licences, gained in May last year. Its northern licence covers an area south from Banks Peninsula to meet a line drawn eastward from Oamaru. Its southern licence continues south from that line to meet a line drawn eastwards from Dunedin. Under its work programme in the north, the company has to complete seismic tests over 3450 km, and drill two wells before May 1, 1985. Under the southern licence, the company has to complete seismic tests over a minimum of 3000 km by May 1, next year, and drill a well before May 1, 1985, or surrender the licence.
