Poison plan called off
A plan to lay poisoned carrots to kill rabbits in Nicholson Park in the Scarborough area, has been stopped by the Christchurch City Council. Permission to lay 1080 poison early next week has been withdrawn by the Chief City Health Inspector. Mr A. P. Millthorpe. Cr C. E. Manning, chairman of the council’s clean air and health committee, said that action had been taken after Scarborough residents approached h’li, about pets and children getting to the poisoned bait. The Plains Pest destruction Board had been given permission to do the poisoning. Cr Manning said that a
meeting would be held soon to explore other ways of controlling rabbits near residential areas. Mrs Mina Davenport, of Taylors Mistake Road, said this week that she was extremely upset by the plan to lay poisoned bait. Cr Manning said there would be “a lot less danger” from the planned rabbit poisoning in Victoria Park, which would be closed to the public for three weeks. He advised dog owners to keep their animals out of that park after the closing ended to avoid the possibility of their getting at the carcases of rabbits which would still have poison in their guts.
