Rubbish dispute settled

Christchurch City Council rubbish collectors have won the right to have extra staff and trucks help them collect rubbish on days when there is extra rubbish because of industrial action. The extra manning and trucks were already being provided by the council on days when there was extra rubbish because of a public holiday. The rubbish workers had gone on strike for three days this month over the issue, but after 14 hours of talks on Wednesday and Thursday between council officers and representatives of the Labourers’ Union and the Canterbury Drivers’ Union, a settlement was reached. The rubbish workers met yesterday and accepted the settlement, which was worked out with the help of a Christchurch conciliator, Mr B. P. Gray.
