Swap area may grow

A bigger land-swap has been suggested for a corner of Hagley Park wanted for the stage 111 redevelopment of Christchurch Hospital. The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, said that tennis courts used by hospital staff might be added to the park, along with 400 sq. m of hospital grounds already proposed for the exchange that will make more room for new buildings on the main hospital site. Changing the park boundary is a cost-cutting suggestion from the Minister of Health, Mr Malcolm, that needs Christchurch City Council approval. In return 340 sq. m of asphalted park land would be added to the hospital. Sir Hamish inspected the area yesterday with representatives of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. "The council does not want to drive any hard bargains on this,” he said. The board did net seem to think the idea was unreasonable. Allowing the public to use the tennis courts would make the land exchange more acceptable to the people of Christchurch. It was also more logical from the point of view of boundaries.
