Mr Frank Stevens
PA Auckland The founder of New Zealand’s largest individually owned pharmaceutical company, Mr Frank Stevens, died in Auckland on Monday, aged 84. Mr Stevens was born in Christchurch but moved to Auckland in the late 1920 s to work for Winstones. He was made redundant in the early 1930 s and was virtually penniless when he started his own drug com-
pany with £5OO borrowed from his father in 1933. When he sold the Stevens group of companies in 1980 it was the biggest pharmaceutical wholesaler in New Zealand with a turnover of ?34 million, about 200 employees, nine warehouses, a pharmaceutical factory in Christchurch and a toiletries factory in Auckland. Mr Stevens is survived by a son and daughter.
