Avonside I struggles
Without the South Island champion, Maurice Burrowes, Avonside I had to struggle to beat its club’s second team in the A grade inter-club winter table tennis competition. For Avonside 11, Lyndon White had good wins against Jan Morris and Michael Burrowes, but he surprisingly lost in straight games to Bert Thompson. Karl Entwhistle won all his singles for Avonside 111 against Dallington, but it did not prevent his team losing, 5-7. His two teammates failed to record a win. Lansdowne, led by the talented Michael Prisk, comfortably accounted for Riccarton 11, 8-3, .in the other contest. Results were:— Riccarton II 3, Lansdowne 8 Singles. — C. J. Tipper lost to T. Lockhart lost to Prisk, 21-19, 15-21, 13-21; beat Baxter, 21-15, 22-20; beat Sargent, 21-17, 18-21, 21-13. Doubles. — Lockhart and Lockhart lost to Prisk and Sargent, 22-20, 18-21, 9-21. Tipper and M. Lockhart lost to Baxter and Sargent, 1321, 18-21. Avonside I 7, Avonside II 5 Singles. — Miss J. Morris beat M. Warren, 21-12, 21-15; lost to L. White, 17-21, 21-19, 19- beat B.
