Aust, shares up again

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets posted their strongest advance in many weeks in hectic trading yesterday, led by sharp gains among leading resource stocks. The advance came after indications overnight that the United States Federal Reserve Board does not intend to take any precipitate action to restrict the growth in the United States money supply. At the close the all-ordin-aries index, which had closed at new highs for the year the last three sessions, was up 9.7 points (1.5 per cent) to 633.0. Daily volume A total of 3,738,675 shares was traded on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday, including 1,221,400 special sales. The total was 1,829,351 more than on Thursday. Industrial shares totalled 3,601,575 (1,720,724 on Thursday), and 137,100 mining and oil shares were traded (188,600 on Thursday). A total of 157 issues was traded.

Leading resource strongly led the rally, as the allresources index soared 12.3 points (2.3 per cent to 530.9). National turnover was $57.60M compared with $33.46M on Thursday, and advances outnumbered declines about nine to four. Leading resource stocks advanced sharply in early trading, led by BHP, which jumped 24c to 914 in the first half-hour. Among other resource leaders, MIM gained 12c to 462, CSR 12c to 407, North BH, 10c to 300, Western Mining, 8c to 478, EZ Industries, 4c to 590, CRA 2c to 542, and Bougainville, 1c to 282. Energy stocks also firmed widely in early trading. Among oil and gas issues, Santos rose 10c to 740, Woodside, 3c to 130, a new high for the year, and Southern Pacific Petroleum 3c to 32.
