G.M. cargo ban

PA Wellington Wellington watersiders have imposed a ban on cargo from the waterfront destined for General Motors’ Trentham plant, in support of suspended coachworkers on the car assembly line. The union secretary, Mr Jim Milne, said last night that his members believed coachworkers at General Motors had been locked out because of their refusal to work overtime.

He said the Wellington waterfront ban applied to

the conventional shipping area, the container terminal, and the sea cargo terminal. “What it means is that nothing is getting across the wharf to the Trentham Plant. Ships are being unloaded normally but the. cargo for Trentham is being stacked on the wharf,” Mr Milne said.

Company spokesman and the Coachworkers’ Union Secretary, Mr Graeme Clarke, declined to comment yesterday on the watersiders’ ban.
