Talks on rail cut

Representatives of the Railways Corporation will meet the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce today to discuss the possible closing of the Christchurch-Picton passenger rail service.

The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr N. S. Bidwell, said that while the Chamber broadly approved of Government moves to increase the role of private enterprise within the transport sector, the rail passenger service had important implications for the whole region.

Mr Bidwell said he is particularly concerned to see that some of the costs borne by the passenger service did not subsequently become dumped on freight operations, with the consequent risk of an increase in north-bound rail freight rates.

“South Island businesses were already suffering a considerable freight disadvantage when compared with their North Island counterparts and any further worsening of this disparity must be avoided at all costs.” he said.
