Man believed dead
PA Auckland The missing blind marathon runner, Bert Smith, aged 51, was presumed drowned off Great Barrier Island following the discovery of his dinghy late on Sunday, the police said yesterday. The dinghy, which has polystyrene floats, was discovered in Blind Bay. Its bungs were missing but the floats kept the boat just below the sea surface. Searchers failed to find any other signs of Mr Smith, who went missing last Wednesday. His wife, Anne, told police she and her husband had a domestic dispute on Wednesday and she had left their remote bush home. She had returned later to find the house burned to the ground and her husband missing.
Mr Smith was believed to have rowed out to sea in the dinghy.
