Dispute resolved

The dispute at the A. and T. Burt, Ltd, factory in Woolston over a redundancy offer made to 12 engineers was resolved yesterday. The district secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Engineers’ Union, Mr

Bob Todd, said that the company had made an offer acceptable to all parties but that he could not disclose the details because they were still being drawn up. About 80 workers at the factory voted by secret ballot last week to strike until the company agreed to

follow a redundancy agreement applying to its sprinkler division. It had offered to pay the 12 engineers in line with the Government’s redundancy regulations, a less generous formula.

Mr Todd said that the workers had returned to work on Friday and that the company had put a proposal to them yesterday morning which had been accepted. The 12 engineers would still be made redundant, he said, but under different terms than those first offered.
