Neighbours meet for support
PA Auckland Fear and anger gripping Auckland inner-city residents after a series of attacks on women over the last few weeks were evident as hundreds of people turned out for community meetings at the week-end. In Freemans Bay, more than 200 residents crowded into the community centre and another 100 listened to speeches through a sound system set up outside.
In Parnell, Knox Hall was packed when more than 300 people met to discuss establishing neighbourhood support groups.
The meetings’ organisers said yesterday that the response demonstrated how frightened and worried people were and how determined they were to do something to protect themselves.
At both meetings volunteers were asked either to co-ordinate neighbourhood support groups or to arrange women’s self-defence classes.
