Success in squash
PA Palmerston North Susan Wasley, of Burnside, a member of last year’s New Zealand junior women’s team, is through to the final of the girls’ under-19 event at the New Zealand age group squash championships in Palmerston North. Seeded No. 1, Wasley ousted the fourth seed, Tracie Baldwin (Wellington), 9-5, 9-4, 9-4 to earn a spot in the final today, against Tracey Mandel, of Khandallah. In Hastings, Paul Viggers, of Sumner, scored one of the most important wins of his career at the Hawke’s BayGisborne district open squash chan/pionships yesterday.
Viggers looked in top class as he convincingly beat the number one seed Craig Blackwood (Auckland), 9-3, 9-3, 4-9, 9-0 in the final. The victory was vital for Viggers’s chances of inclusion in the New Zealand team for the world championships in Auckland in October. The squad will be named this week. The deception and brilliance of the former Hawke’s Bay star proved too much for Blackwood in the hour-long final. Blackwood’s sister, Robyn, was a clear-cut winner of the women’s open title with a 9-1, 9-0, 9-3 win over Sheryl Clarke, of Hamilton. -■
