Minister likely to intervene
Parliamentary reporter The Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, may intervene in the dispute between Hunt International Petroleum and the Merchant Service Guild. Mr Bolger said that the parties had fixed positions, and “it is almost certain that it will require someone like myself to try to bring them together and resolve this. It has to be resolved.” Taken to their extreme.
the implications were that the firm’s drilling programme in the Great South Basin would not go ahead, Mr Bolger said. “That is not acceptable.” The dispute centres on manning of Hunt Petroleum vessels in New Zealand waters. United States law says the vessels must have United States masters, but the guild wants New Zealand masters.
