N-power an alternative

NZPA Perth Tasmania may have to consider building a nuclear power station at the turn of the century because of the High Court decision on the Gordon-below- Franklin Dam, the Tasmanian Premier, Mr Robin Gray, said in Perth yesterday. Mr Gray said that he would not accept a nuclear power station as an alterna-

tive solution to Tasmania’s future power needs because he was not satisfied that waste problems had been overcome.

“Ultimately I think we will be forced into that situation, because about 40 per cent of the hydro resources that we have left untapped are in the World Heritage area,” he said. “Assuming that is unavailable to us, it is going to

mean that the day when we have to go nuclear is going to come that much closer.

“We are forgoing 20 years of potential electricity development by not proceeding with hydro development in the south-west,” Mr Gray said. “I therefore believe it brings us 20 years closer to the. day when we are going to have to consider nuclear power.”
