Former Minister chosen
NZPA Canberra A former Whitlam Government Foreign Minister, Mr Don Willesee. has been appointed chairman of the Australia-New Zealand Foundation.
The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister. Mr Bill Hayden, said that Mr Willesee would bring tremendous personal prestige and expertise to the task of promoting friendship across the Tasman.
The retiring chairman, Sir Peter Derham, had significantly influenced the work of the foundation during its first years of operation, and had made a valuable contribution to the improvement of Tasman relations.
Mr Hayden also announced that Professor Peter Boyce would retire from the board, to be replaced by Mr Robin Burnett, a senior lecturer in law at the Australian National University.
The foundation exists on both sides of the Tasman. The Australian branch was established in 1978 by Prime Ministerial agreement as an affirmation of the deep ties between the two nations, based on common beliefs and shared ideals, Mr Hayden said.
