Australian sharemarkets advanced in active trading, because of strong gains among media, oil and gas, and gold stocks and despite a sharp decline on Wall Street overnight. The all-ordinaries index rose some 3.4 points to 614.8, the all-industrials was up 3.0 at 749.1, and the allresources up 3.7 at 506.2. Turnover totalled ?Austls.3 million in Sydney, $17.4 million in Melbourne, and sAust33.2 million nationally, with volume boosted by substantial trading on overseas accounts and by several large special sales. Advances outnumbered declines by a ratio of more
than two to one — by 173 to 78 in Sydney, and by 151 to 67 in Melbourne. Oil and gas stocks led the market advance, as the sector index, which on Thursday closed at new high for the year, soared a further 18.3 points to 587.7 — a 3.2 per cent gain. Crusader, which had gained 110 c in the last seven days, jumped a further 28c to 740. Santos rose 22c to 712, and Bridge Oil contributing shares gained 20c to 230, both in heavy trading.
