Beautiful woman and four men

“Smiley’s People” will end on Sunday night. It will be replaced by a new series, “Love for Lydia,” based on the book by H. E. Bates. It is the story of the beautiful, unpredictable Lydia Aspen and the four young men whose passionate love for her brings joy, sorrow and tragedy into their lives. Her innocence and wilfulness creates havoc and torment in the lives of those around her. Tenderness explodes into violence, happiness ends in tragedy. “Love for Lydia” is the story of a girl whose fierce longing for worldly experience is so consuming that it becomes a weapon of destruction.

The series, produced by London Week-end Television, stars Mel Martin, Jeremy Irons (of “Brideshead” fame), Christopher Blake and Peter Davison.
