Second fire in a week at club

Detectives are investigating the second suspicious fire in a week at the Christchurch Musicians’ Club, at 319 Cambridge Terrace. The latest fire, noticed at 1.48 a.m. yesterday, appeared to have been set in an alcove outside the building, the police said. It caused moderate damage to the rear of the club before firemen, who only had to come across the Avon River from their headquarters station, brought the blaze under control. It appeared that no-one had got inside the building, said a police spokesman. Samples have been sent to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to determine if an accelerant was used.

Last week, someone broke into the club and set a fire in the bar area. It was out when firemen arrived, and the damage was not serious.
