Union invokes act
The Canterbury branch of the National Union of Railwaymen has invoked the new Official Information Act to get a breakdown of Railways Corporation figures on passenger train subsidies. A written request for the information was handed to the Christchurch district traffic manager, Mr R. Campbell, yesterday by the branch secretary of the union, Mr P. S. Corliss.
“We want all the information relating to the formula used to calculate the amount of subsidy for the
Southerner - and the West Coast and Picton passenger services,” Mr Corliss said. “We are confident someone in Wellington has grossly miscalculated the amount needed to subsidise these services,” he said. Mr Campbell said that the information asked for could only be obtained from Wellington and he had sent the letter on to the General Manager of Railways, Mr T. M. Hayward. Mr Corliss said that if he
did not get any satisfaction he would have to consider taking the plea to the Ombudsman.
