S.I. ski-field conditions
Conditions at South Island ski-fields as reported by the New Zealand Snow Centre at 2 p.m. yesterday (all facilities operating unless stated) were:— Mount Hutt. — Base 65cm; last fall July 1; packed powder, main runs groomed; field skiable to bottom of chair, upper T-bar going from Saturday; chains required. Porter Heights. — Packed powder; chains required. Tekapo. — Base 65cm; last fall 10cm July 1; powder, main runs groomed; chains required. Lake Ohau. — Opening tomorrow. Cardrona. — Groomed snow on good base; Crown range road open; chains essential. Treble Cone. — Base
130ccm; last fall June 30; excellent snow over whole mountain; all facilities operating except bottom T-bar; chains essential. Coronet Peak. — Base 100 cm; last fall 13cm July 1; Rocky Gully T-bar and Blue Gum poma operating; ski school and canteen open; chains required. Tasman Glacier. — Last fall 20cm July 1; powder snow; ski planes operating; cross-country ski-ing also available. . Mount Dobson. — Base of 40cm; last fall July 1; main tow and learners’ platter operating; main runs groomed; chains required. Harris Mountains heli-ski. — Base 150 cm; surface snow dry powder, helicopter operating. Ben Ohau. — Base of 200 cm;
surface snow dry powder; helicopter operating. Broken River. — Base of 130 cm; last fall July 1; mainly powder snow; all facilities except ski school; ski school open from July 17; chains required. Temple Basin. — Excellent snow; all facilities but limited ski hire; goods lift operating. Amuri. — Base 65cm; chains required. Mount Cheeseman. — 1 metre wind-packed powder snow; good ski-ing over whole mountain; open daily from Saturday, chains essential. Mount Robert. — Open Saturday to Monday; main,' bottom and learners’ tows only. The Rainbow ski-field has yet to open.
