Woman’s feet sliced off

NZPA London A pensioner, Mrs Vera Coombes, of Bramley, underwent a five-hour operation yesterday to stitch back her feet, severed at shin level in an accident in a busy shopping street. The woman, aged 69, was one of three people injured when sheets of sharp metal crashed off a passing truck at Bramley, near Guildford. Ambulances took two women and a girl, aged 12, to hospital. Mrs Rosalind Park, aged 34, from Hove, Sussex, sustained a severed leg. Susan Keane, from Bramley, was cut and shocked but sent

home after treatment. A Royal Surrey County Hospital spokesman said that Mrs Coombes had undergone a five-hour operation. Extensive orthopaedic surgery has enabled surgeons to sew back both feet. She is in a fair condition and stable. A spokesman for Surrey police said that two pallets, each containing 127 sheets of metal measuring 1.8 metres by 1 metre, fell off a truck as it went around a bend. “The metal had very sharp edges. It was like 254 razor blades flying through tne air.”
