Problems for judges

Christchurch Boys’ High School has a proud record in sport, and the choice of its old boy "sportsmen of the year” is usually difficult. This year there are five nominations for the award, and the winner will be announced at a reunion of former pupils at the school after the annual rugby match against Christ’s College on Tuesday.

The nominations cover four sports, and again present the judges with particular problems. The nominees (in alphabetical order) are: Craig

Adair, who won a cycling gold medal at the Brisbane Commonwealth games last year; Richard Hadlee, the outstanding test cricketer; Alwyn Harvey, captain of the Auckland rugby team which won the national championship last year; Don Hayes, captain of the Canterbury rugby team which won the Ranfurly Shield in 1982, and Dave Meredith, who last year won his fifth Canterbury billiards title, his fifth Canterbury snooker championship, and his third consecutive New Zealand billiards title.
